“A Farewell to Pablo: Reflections on His Time Here and His Inspiring Open Studio”

Pablo Mutate stands with his artwork made with charcoal and recycled palm stems used for his Open Studio and created during his residency at Miami Artists Nonprofit Residency Rainbow Oasiiis

Q: Pablo, looking back at your time with us, what were some of the highlights?

P: Definitely getting to work outside of my comfort zone and allowing myself to thrive in the uncomfortable moments of stepping away from charcoal and immersing myself in a new medium and a new way of working.

Q: You’ve led numerous open studio sessions during your time here. Can you share a memorable moment from these?

P:Getting to hear the response of the work is always something I look forward to, sometimes I’ll admit I get nervous, I think to myself what if it doesn’t get the response I was hoping for but luckily in the end, it all worked out.

Q:How have you seen the digital art space evolve during your time with us? -Mainly for my work, I tend to lean more toward the traditional side of art. However, as my practice has matured, I find myself using these digital materials to help make the drawings and allow me to play with a concept before fully committing to it on wood.
What do you feel has been your greatest contribution to our organization?

P: I feel that as artists, our contribution to any program is innovating. Taking advantage of a program to do something that you wouldn’t normally do which I hopefully did.

Q:During your open studio, you interacted with many aspiring artists. What advice did you find yourself giving most often?

P:Always focus on the work and don’t stress over exhibits or setbacks. If you want to be a working studio artist then do it, make a space for yourself, have a set of hours dedicated to the work, and act as if you already are that thing you want to become and the universe has a way of acknowledging your efforts and will present opportunities for you. Just do it for the love of it.

Q:As you transition out of our organization, what are you most excited about for your future?

P:I don’t know what the future holds for me, I have many projects lined up for the rest of the year so I’m excited to see what comes out of that and I hope it all goes well.

Q:Finally, if you could describe your experience with us in three words, what would they be?

P:Magical, transformative, and hopeful.
